Eco Extension
Thornage, Norfolk
Purslows managed the extension of an existing cedar-clad accommodation building at a residential care centre for adults with learning disabilities. The new building uses a steel and timber frame and is designed to be highly insulated and airtight for energy efficiency.
Heating is provided by air-source heat pumps, which also replaced the old LPG system for the existing building. Ventilation comes from a mechanical heat recovery system, and rainwater is collected in a large underground tank to be reused on the site’s farm.
On the outside, the extension is clad in cedar planks with neat recessed bolt fittings, while the roof is finished with natural slate. Zinc-clad projecting windows are angled carefully on the inner elevations to prevent overlooking between the old and new buildings. A flat-roofed link corridor connects the extension to the main building and houses plant and laundry rooms.
