Renovation of Listed House
Norwich, Norfolk
Purslows was brought in to breathe new life into a beautiful but long-neglected Grade II listed house on Elm Hill - one of the most historic streets in Norwich. The building dates back to the 16th century, with some parts believed to have survived the great fire of 1507. After standing empty for years, it was bought by a local conservation charity determined to bring it back into use.
We handled everything from securing planning and Listed Building Consent to getting Building Regulations approval. Our team then specified the works, managed the tender process, and oversaw the entire project on site.
Traditional repair methods were key to this sensitive restoration - limecrete floors, lime plaster and render were used to avoid the need for modern damp proofing. Along the way, we uncovered some remarkable original features, including blocked doorways and windows, a historic fireplace, and even old wallpaper hidden behind later finishes.
At the same time, we carefully brought the building up to modern standards. Fire and sound insulation were added to the party walls, new heating and electrics were installed, and a range of structural repairs were carried out to ensure the building’s long-term stability.
